People with CF living longer
11 Apr 2021 23:06
Almost 12% of people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) in Ireland are over the age of 40, compared with just 4% in 2009, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) has said. According to CFI chief executive, Philip Watt, this is "huge progress in a relatively short period of time". However, more needs to be done to support people with the condition. CF is an inherited disease that primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick sticky mucus t
2,800 side-effect reports made about AZ vaccine
11 Apr 2021 23:06
Around 2,800 reports of suspected side-effects associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine have been made in Ireland, the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has said. According to the HPRA, this is in the context of over 204,000 doses. Of the 2,800 reports, 18 events are related to blood clots. However, none of these are of the nature of the very rare blood clots of concern, which led to a number of countries, including Ireland, temporarily halting the use of the vaccine recently. The HP
Next eight weeks critical
11 Apr 2021 23:06
The next eight weeks are critical in the fight against COVID-19, the deputy chief medical officer has said. According to Dr Ronan Glynn, any significant increase in close contacts over the coming weeks "is likely to lead to a significant fourth wave of infection in the range of that experienced in January 2021". "We can and should be optimistic for an enjoyable summer ahead but, in the meantime, we have to continue to work together to prevent a further wave of infection as we accelerate vaccin

The Taoiseach has announced a phased easing of public health restrictions, starting from April 12. According to Micheál Martin, Ireland is now "in the final stretch of this terrible journey" and he called on people to "get through this final phase together". From April 12, all pupils will return to school, people will be allowed to travel within their county or within 20km of their home if they are crossing county boundaries, and all residential construction can restart. From April 19,
Hospital waiting times longer than reported
11 Apr 2021 23:06
The way in which Ireland currently reports public hospital waiting lists does not give a complete picture of the length of time patients are left waiting for services. In fact, waiting times are actually longer than previously reported, new findings suggest. According to researchers at the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), while waiting lists are a feature of health systems worldwide, they have been a "significant issue" in Ireland over the last 10 years and have been exacerbated b
